Giant Pandas Jia Jia and Kai Kai of River Safari Welcome their First Panda Cub
Singapore’s first panda cub is finally here. It is indeed a panda-mic cub.
Jia Jia finally gave birth to her first cub. The panda cub was born on 14 August 2021 at 7:50 AM at the River Safari.
13 year old Kai Kai, the new father, and 12-year old Jia Jia are finally parents. Jia Jia’s pregnancy was all thanks to good animal care, assisted reproductive science, perseverance, and of course, advice from panda experts from China.
Now, it’s all about supporting the first time mother.

1. The giant panda's black-and-white markings serve as camouflage and for communication. The white parts are to help it hide in snowy habitats. While the arms and legs help it hide in shade.
2. Mother pandas have impressive maternal instincts. They keep contact with their cub nearly 100% of the time during their first month. The cubs normally rest on her front and are covered by her paw, arm or head.
3. Baby giant pandas already learn how to climb at 5 months old, and they often practice by climbing on their mothers.
